Marcus knows Jim is his minutes after meeting the snarly, jumpy ex-professor at the local bookstore. He thinks Jim is a natural submissive, someone who needs order and discipline in his life to help with Jim's anxiety and bad health habits. So Marcus decides to pursue Jim relentlessly, because even if Jim's mouth is saying no, his body is saying yes.

There's a lot more to Jim than meets the eye, and Marcus will have to be careful. Jim knows what it means to lose everything, knows what it's like to be without friends or family. Jim feels broken, and knowing that he likes the kinds of weird things Marcus wants to do to him only makes him scared that he's losing his mind.

Their chemistry is so real, so genuine, that Jim lets Marcus wear him down, lets Marcus take control. Eventually, his trust grows, allowing them to enter into the BDSM lifestyle together, learning about each other every day, with every scene. Jim is still uncertain sometimes, though, and he thinks Marcus might just want him because he's cracked. Can this top and bottom pair find a way to understand their wants and needs, and make a life that works for them alone?

Reading about the relationship that Marcus and Jim establish was quite interesting and the characters themselves were fascinating, each in their own way.

Marcus is strong and confident. He goes for exactly what he wants and what he wants is Jim, a professor he meets at a bookstore. I was surprised that this bookstore meeting was enough for Marcus to recognise the submissive traits in Jim and identify him as someone needing a dominant hand. I just saw Jim as a rude and obnoxious customer! He does push Jim and there are a few uncomfortable moments where he seemed to push too far but many more moments where there is a real sense of the love he feels.

I liked Jim although he never fully grabbed me. I found him slightly annoying because he appeared just plain childish at times. Although he had (I assume) good reason for his nervous and introverted behaviour, there was not enough background provided so that I could fully understand what happened. We know he was accused of something but not WHY or exactly how it was resolved.

I would have enjoyed a deeper insight into both men, to better understand why they were fulfilled by type of relationship they enjoyed. With a novel this length there should have been ample opportunity to do this.

I read these types of books (BDSM) for pleasure, not delving too deeply into the 'correctness' of the relationship or whether it is portrayed realistically. What matters to me is how I perceive the relationship and the characters. For me, the scenes and sex between Jim and Marcus were well written and enjoyable.

The major downfall for me was the length of the story. At nearly 500 pages, I expected a few more significant events and a significant ending. Maybe a big misunderstanding or some other type of dramatic event would have been good? As it was, the story just softly closed leaving a sense that something was missing.

This book is the first in the series and at this point in time there are 17 books in total. I do find myself compelled to finish a series once I start so I am crossing my fingers that the future books are slightly shorter and very engaging.

0 stars. I'm sorry, but just... no. I don't ever expect a great plot from books in this genre but this book has absolutely none at all. This book has so little plot that I began to get bored of the sex scenes, which has never happened before. In addition, there were scenes that seemed downright non-con or dub-con between the main characters, which is something I cannot stand. Also, the only plot outside of the crazy amount of sex the main characters were having perpetuated the idea that women lie about getting raped. I think the fact that the main character's back story revolved around his life being ruined by a rape accusation sends the wrong message and is, frankly, unacceptable.
This is one of those books that sucks you in and spits you out with your outlook changed. When I first got and read this book, I struggled to get through it as I'd never really read anything that was so heavily BDSM and it just seemed like I'd never reach the end of the story. Now, two additional readings later, I relish the journey that Jim and Marcus embark on together and with each new milestone reached, I can't help but marvel all over again how much Jim has grown and changed. This book really put Sean Michael on the map for me as an author and I've enjoyed every one of his books since. If you're on the fence about this one all I can say is to take a chance; I did and regardless of how difficult it was for me to read through at first, I've never regretted it. Great book.
I must admit that this book has left me a little bit confused. Was this about domestic discipline? Total Power Exchange? S & M? Added to the confusion is the back story of Jim...without a proper explanation of WHAT exactly happened meant that I became less sympathetic to his emotional issues the longer the book progressed. It also meant I was miffed when the book finished as I stuck it out to find out how the issue was eventually resolved. I hate loose ends...especially ones this big.

Another reviewer said that "... the whole book is like a stream of consciousness..." which I agree with completely. It was a really odd way to write & I must say that I had to force myself to read past the half-way mark because of the 'sameness' of the dialogue. This got boring very quickly. If the book were shorter it might not become such an issue.

Having been so negative, I would have to say that there is a major positive...the sex is HOT. Yes the BDSM is questionable but if you can get past that & the monotonous dialogue, you could enjoy the book.

So. You don't buy a book in e-book, paperback and hardback formats unless you absolutely ADORE the story. *This* is the story that got me hooked on M/m bdsm fiction, and quite frankly, it has set the standard ever since. I often wish that I hadn't started off by reading Bent, because once you start with the best, then most others pale in comparison. I won't bother to summarize the plot here because others have done so. This story is like the best Thai extra spicy curry incredibly sweet--and the characters share that indescribable connection that jumps out at you at every page; incredibly hot the bdsm scenes are well, WHOA; and just incredibly satisfying the process of submission--not just the acts themselves, but the psychological aspect of it, are described here in wonderful detail. The William and Tanny series are similar. The only thing I didn't like is that the book had to end. I hope Sean Michael writes another full-length book (or 2) about Marcus and Jim. I'd love to see how Tanny and Jim became best friends, and whether Marcus and Jim have settled in a deeper submission. Thanks Michael.
